Job Summary

The Guest Relations & Membership Associate will serve as a positive “first impression” for guests, volunteers, and members to Texas Discovery Gardens. Convey a courteous, professional image in person and on the telephone. Greet Texas Discovery Gardens’ guests in a friendly and positive manner; manage and monitor visitor entrance into the Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium according to USDA regulations and direct and correctly answer visitor inquiries; efficiently and accurately facilitate admission and membership transactions in person utilizing the Versai ticketing system, direct and correctly answer visitor inquiries.

Work with Guest Relations Director to recruit, maintain, build and enhance membership through member solicitation, renewal efforts, and appreciation events. This position will play a key role in building and conveying the value of TXDG to our members, maintaining membership records, identifying and cultivating new members, and assisting with developing campaigns to retain and boost membership.

Provide additional administrative support as needed to the Guest Relations Director and other senior staff.

Status: Full-time non-exempt w/ benefits

Compensation: $11.00/hr

Relatively flexible schedule: Tues-Sat (9:30-5: 30 pm) or Wed-Sun (9:30-5: 30 pm) some holidays needed. Varying hours during the State Fair of Texas and Texas Discovery Gardens' Plant Sales. This could be a part-time position depending on the right candidate.

Full-Time Benefits include: Paid vacation & sick leave, Paid holidays, Basic Term Life and Long-Term Disability (part-time employees are not eligible for benefits)

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Greet, direct, and take visitor admission and membership fees

  • Follow financial and cashier protocols as directed by Guest Relations Director in accordance with policy

  • Act as Floor Manager as needed for the Guest Relations Director

  • Answer general questions about exhibits, gardens, and rentals both in person and via telephone

  • Ensure work areas are neat and clean at all times

  • Assist senior staff with data entry, mailings, and event planning

  • Responsible for maintenance of membership database including the input of records, processing memberships, list pulls, and creating reports (training provided)

Qualification Standards

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) required; college degree preferred

  • 1+ years minimum cash handling experience

  • 2+ years in customer service

  • 1+ years leadership experience preferred

  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills

  • Excellent math and cash-handling skills

  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite

  • Ability to complete tasks successfully with minimal supervision

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand/walk for extended periods of time

  • Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects for exhibits

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to accurately convey information in English, and bilingual fluency in Spanish is preferred

  • Must maintain composure and objectivity under pressure

  • Must be able to work with and understand financial information and data, and basic arithmetic functions

  • Must be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately

  • Must be effective at listening to, understanding and clarifying the concerns of visitors, volunteers, and co-workers

  • Must maintain the confidentiality of all financial, membership and donor information
