The Entomology Assistant works with our Entomologist to care for and maintain arthropod collections and act as a docent in our Rosine Smith Sammons Butterfly House and Insectarium. As visitors come through, the intern talks to them about butterflies and other insects. They assist with or leads daily butterfly release informational talks.
Duties and Functions
Act as a docent when visitors are inside the Butterfly House.
Maintain insect lab and care for arthropods on and off exhibit with emphasis on efficiency and care.
Keep good records of daily and long term care of living collections.
Assist Entomologist with plant maintenance and pest control on occasion when needed.
Assist with other departments as needed.
Participate in training/meetings as required
Plan, implement and oversee daily Toddler Talks in the Butterfly House at 11 am.
Plan, implement and oversee daily Critter Encounter talks in the lobby at 2 pm.
Oversee daily Butterfly Release Talks in the Butterfly House at noon when needed.
Ensure all public programs are mission-related, hopefully inspiring guests to take action

Extremely organized and thrives in fast-paced environments
Advanced experience working with the public with a desire to put customer service first. Amiable disposition a necessity.
Ability to complete tasks successfully with minimal supervision.
Ability to stand/walk and climb ladders for extended periods of time
Ability to frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects for exhibits.
Tolerance of working both inside and outside in different environmental conditions associated with living conservatories. May require some
Ability to follow and give specific written and oral instructions with close attention to detail.
Organized and self-motivated to complete tasks.
Able to work Sundays.
